I was so glad our Defense showed up in the second half. I think we allowed way too many yards up the middle and off tackle. We need to get better had holding on to the runner and bringing him.....tackle the guy don't bump shoulders with him. DB's need to look for the ball.
Having said that I saw a lot of good to build on...Covington and Hilll looked very good most of the time. Good hard hitting in the second half. I was impressed with Richardson and Shippy at LB.... The went left when they shoulld have gone right a few times, but they gave a great effort...both are Freshmen. Dakota was also outstanding and so was Wylie. I think when they have a few games under them they will jell even more...the coaches will show them their mistakes and they will correct them. The effort was there good in the first half, better in the second half. I think we will see a much more inspired D next week.

Honestly I am a little tired of waiting on the defense to jell "next week". Been waiting on it for over a year now.

I sure hope we do not see another 2 tight-end offense this year...they had 6 or 7 on the O-line all night...that is some hard work for our front 3...I am sure they were slow to get up Sunday morning.

New season new scheme so your "jelling" clock should have reset for this season. The D kept us in this game dont kid yourself.

Yeah it was the tail of to halves this week. They had their troubles early, but in the late 3rd and 4th quarter they really came up huge!!!

The defense was able to keep us in the game against a team that had 91 yards of offense last week and finished last or 2nd to last in pretty much every offensive category in their conference last year. I would hope that the defense would keep us in a game against a team like that.

Get ready for this weekend!
I think the problem with the defense this past Saturday was more a matter of execution than scheme . . . perhaps the 3-3-5 just highlights these execution problem? Maybe taking the proper angle toward a runner and tackling him hard are easier and more familiar for a 230 pound LB than for a 190 pound DB.

We are doing a tremendous amount of blitzing in this defense. I saw guys blowing right past ball carriers quite a bit Saturday. When that happens, the back will get to the LB level quickly, and if we don't get some help there, it breaks for a pretty long run. We've only got a three man front, and they will usually be tied up with blockers. If we're sending one or two on a blitz, that leaves three or four at the LB level to clean up. Fortunately the guys closed quickly most of the time, and they didn't really get any long runs that I can remember.
Those blitzes also put us in man coverage a lot. As long as our DB can man up one on one, we're in great shape. When they don't, I can be a bit play.
This D should be effective against the spread teams in our conference. Northeastern will not be that type of team. They will line it up with big OL and try to smash mouth us like UGA did.

We don't tackle well. Go watch the highlights on bullochheadlinenews.com and check out Chris Rogers fumble that he caused. If he doesn't knock the ball loose that guy breaks off a 50 yarder. That wasn't the only time it happened and he wasn't the only one but our DB's have to know that if they are making a tackle there probably isn't anyone behind them... WRAP HIS A$$ UP!!!

I noticed that as well, chris didnt even have his arms up. He just ran into the guy head first.

So what options do you have and are you going to execute any of them?

I don't get paid to come up with "options" or "executions". I just expect the guy that is getting paid to come up with options and executions.

The guys blitzing are just running straight through the line. They don't look for a ballcarrier or anything. I am not sure if that is what they are taught to do on a blitz, but it seems to defeat the purpose if all you are doing is trying to scare them and not tackle them.

Agree with the poor tackling critique 100%. I've often wondered if the lack of good fundamental tackling in college and the NFL is a byproduct of NOT tackling in practice. Coaching-wise we were in position to make plays, we just didn't make the tackle.
I also got bored watching them throw the 8-yard curl with the corner 8 yards off the receiver and the safety behind him. When we run the same play on offense, it seems like 4 DB's and a cheerleader are standing on top of our receiver.
I'm not worried though, it's clear we have loads of talent. The only expectation I have is improvement week to week and that should be easy this week.

The poor tackling is a by product of poor pop warner coaching, poor middle school coaching and poor high school coaching. No fundamentals. Also most are looking to be a top play / play of the day nominee. The ESPN generation. I don't think this will change.
