I did this last week and it got a good response with some good debate so I'll do it again this week. Here goes:
The good:
Raja Andrews....nice to have him back.
The defense....glad they showed up in the second half. They were there all night in positions to make plays they just didn't make them until the second half. We were really hitting HARD as well. Great job guys. I'll take 20 points allowed every game because we should win every game that we hold our opponents to 20.
The running backs....they ran hard all night. Urbano was really getting after it.
Antonio Henton....we have established who the number 1 qb is. No question until Chappelle shows me something. He led us down the field when we were down and he made plays when we needed them. Those zone read runs he was making add a nice dimension to the running game.
4 down short yardage defense....the guys really bowed up on those short yardage plays everytime they needed to. Good job.
Special forces kickoff coverage....they were on top of their game last night keeping APSU inside their 20 a few times.
The bad:
Our kicking game....Charlie didn't have a great night punting but I'm not all that worried about him. Hartley, well, lets hope this isn't 2006 all over again. If it continues, Adrian Mora or Charlie Edwards should be given a shot.
Lee Chappelle....I said it last wee and I still believe it. He gets lost in the speed of the game. He can't go through his reads quick enough and he holds onto the ball too long. One time last night APSU blitzed and Chappelle rather than looking for his hot receiver and getting rid of the ball, holds it and keeps looking around and not trying to avoid the blitz. He has to practice well for coach to have so much confidence in him but until he can lead us down the field in a game, not practice, by throwing the ball rather than just by handing it off like he did last night, hes not the man.
The ugly:
Our tackling on defense....We really, really, really, really need to shore this up. APSU probably doesn't score more than 7 points last night if we tackle like we are supposed to. I couldn't tell you how many times we were in position to make a tackle for a minimal gain and we miss it and they got 5+ yards out of it.
Personal foul on Tim Camp....he tackles the man on the punt return and holds him down, then to add insult to injury he gets a personal foul to go with it. Then, hes back in the game 2 plays later. If I were Coach Hatcher, his butt would have been on the bench for a while for pulling that stunt. I don't know the circumstances behind it but that was flat out stupid because we were down in the game and it was getting late in the 3rd quarter.
My thoughts:
Glad to get the win. I think we still have a long way to go and we will get better. But this type game is a blessing in disguise. I know the fans don't like it but you have to remember, this team is extremely young and they were handed some adversity last night. Things did not go our way most of the game and we had the choice to quit or pick ourselves up and do something about it. It appears we chose the latter and showed what we were capable of doing and ended up winning the game. Another thing it does is build confidence in the guys that we can come from behind. Cudos to the defense for really busting it. We need that every game, all game from now on boys. Another thing people need to realize is we scored 34 points and played horrible football most of the night. We will be fine going forward because we will keep getting better. Patience is the key with a young team. GATA this week in practice boys and come out better next week.
And I'll leave you with what I know Coach Erk Russell would say about last nights game.
"34 is more than 20 and we'll take it every time."
