View Full Version : Thoughts on game 2

I did this last week and it got a good response with some good debate so I'll do it again this week. Here goes:

The good:

Raja Andrews....nice to have him back.

The defense....glad they showed up in the second half. They were there all night in positions to make plays they just didn't make them until the second half. We were really hitting HARD as well. Great job guys. I'll take 20 points allowed every game because we should win every game that we hold our opponents to 20.

The running backs....they ran hard all night. Urbano was really getting after it.

Antonio Henton....we have established who the number 1 qb is. No question until Chappelle shows me something. He led us down the field when we were down and he made plays when we needed them. Those zone read runs he was making add a nice dimension to the running game.

4 down short yardage defense....the guys really bowed up on those short yardage plays everytime they needed to. Good job.

Special forces kickoff coverage....they were on top of their game last night keeping APSU inside their 20 a few times.

The bad:

Our kicking game....Charlie didn't have a great night punting but I'm not all that worried about him. Hartley, well, lets hope this isn't 2006 all over again. If it continues, Adrian Mora or Charlie Edwards should be given a shot.

Lee Chappelle....I said it last wee and I still believe it. He gets lost in the speed of the game. He can't go through his reads quick enough and he holds onto the ball too long. One time last night APSU blitzed and Chappelle rather than looking for his hot receiver and getting rid of the ball, holds it and keeps looking around and not trying to avoid the blitz. He has to practice well for coach to have so much confidence in him but until he can lead us down the field in a game, not practice, by throwing the ball rather than just by handing it off like he did last night, hes not the man.

The ugly:

Our tackling on defense....We really, really, really, really need to shore this up. APSU probably doesn't score more than 7 points last night if we tackle like we are supposed to. I couldn't tell you how many times we were in position to make a tackle for a minimal gain and we miss it and they got 5+ yards out of it.

Personal foul on Tim Camp....he tackles the man on the punt return and holds him down, then to add insult to injury he gets a personal foul to go with it. Then, hes back in the game 2 plays later. If I were Coach Hatcher, his butt would have been on the bench for a while for pulling that stunt. I don't know the circumstances behind it but that was flat out stupid because we were down in the game and it was getting late in the 3rd quarter.

My thoughts:

Glad to get the win. I think we still have a long way to go and we will get better. But this type game is a blessing in disguise. I know the fans don't like it but you have to remember, this team is extremely young and they were handed some adversity last night. Things did not go our way most of the game and we had the choice to quit or pick ourselves up and do something about it. It appears we chose the latter and showed what we were capable of doing and ended up winning the game. Another thing it does is build confidence in the guys that we can come from behind. Cudos to the defense for really busting it. We need that every game, all game from now on boys. Another thing people need to realize is we scored 34 points and played horrible football most of the night. We will be fine going forward because we will keep getting better. Patience is the key with a young team. GATA this week in practice boys and come out better next week.

And I'll leave you with what I know Coach Erk Russell would say about last nights game.

"34 is more than 20 and we'll take it every time."

I agree that Henton needs to be the #1 QB from here on out. It isn't because Lee Chapple is bad at all, rather, it's because right now Henton is about the only playmaker on the team and he clearly doesn't get rattled.

We aren't a good enough football team for Chapple to be our QB. If we had a strong offensive line and playmaking WRs all over the field then maybe we could line up and run the "Hatch Attack" Air Raid style that Hatcher would love to run. Honestly, The Valdosta State Blazers probably have an overall better football team than we do right now and would likely come to statesboro and put on a clinic against our defense on how to run the "Hatch Attack."

Hatcher has always said that the offense has to be molded around what the team does best. Last year he recognized a talent in Foster and built the offense around him. This year I think we will continue to be a zone read team with Henton. While he's no Jayson Foster in the running department (who is?), he's a far superior passer. Hatcher may want the team to pass it 65% of the time but I think we'll end up being a balanced attack using the zone running game and option plays to try and open up play-action passes down the field.

Good review, this game reminded me alot of Chatty game from last season, we just happened to turn this one back around and bring the victory home. Good review!

Agreed we didn’t play well on either side of the ball but we are very young and are going to make young mistakes. #9 is Daryl Pasco this time last year he was playing high school football I though he held his own very well even taking a completed pass from the receiver without drawing the foul. AP's running game was not our boy’s fault. The 3-3-5 is not the best defense to stop a good ground game and leaves big hold between tackles up front. Henton is the man as far as imp concerned, Lee is a good kid but just is ready for the speed of a college football game. The two-quarter back situation has got to go; once Henton was in long enough to establish his game he was awesome.

Last year first home game west Ga (Div 2) we were behind 10-7 or something like that. Did we ever expect at that time or even after that game that we would beat APP and Wofford on the road. Come on Guys, Hatcher has got to have actual games under his belt to evaluate this team and coach. How does he know how a kid will respond to a game if he's never seen him in the game. This team is young and will be very slow to progress. They will be very erratic as most young teams are. Inconsistency is the only consistent thing about a young team. Give them a chance to grow.

West Georgia was beating us 21-10 at halftime.

Lining up offsides on a punt! That has got to be a point of emphasis this week in practice! Wiped out a great return by Raja Andrews. And took a lot of Mo out.

Running the stairs in the stadium for every tackle that doesn't exhibit good fundamentals. I'm tired of this bad tackling crap.

A clear sign that he is an upstanding individual. :)

GMC has been running the 3-3-5 since 2001, and runs it well. GSU has run it all of two games. It'll gel.

Hatcher has clearly shown that he can coach with anybody's players. He shown that he his phenomenal with players that he has recruited. He's doing one heck of job with the personnel that he has on hand.
