Northeastern is in the Colonial Athletic Assoc up in the New England conference
They have 15 starters returning this year
On defense they use a 3-4 scheme and the offense will have nine starters return
They had impressive wins last year over New Hampshire and Hofstra
Their record last year was 3-8 and they are picked to finish 5th in the CAA
This should be an interesting game and I hope that it is hot and humid with lots of gnats cause that always gives us an advantage with the northern teams coming down here

Haha...you know...I always hear about lots of gnats in Statesboro. I'm not saying they're not there, but go live in Cairo, GA and you'll learn what it's really like to be swarmed by gnats. I always tell people there's not really a gnat problem in Statesboro compared to what I dealt with growing up.
I went to Klak's wedding last year down there and spent a hot summer afternoon outside and thought I'd be toted off by damn things.

It's nothing like Savannah or any other coastal area, either. Folks who haven't been eaten alive by sandgnats have no idea how much worse it could be.

Coastal Georgia sandgnats are spawns of Satan, I truly believe. They are vicious, evil creatures.

Northeastern will be big up front. Their OL will be almost as big as UGA. Looks like they threw the ball almost 40 times against Ball State. Their QB threw for a ton against us when he was a freshman. Now he's a SR. I wouldn't think we're just going to blow them out. If they've got any kind of a running game with those big OL, it will be closer than we want it to be, since we don't seem to match up defensively against those smash mouth type teams.
They scored twice against Ball State, who handled Navy pretty handily this weekend.

Know what you mean... after growing up in beautiful Richland, GA and then being in Sboro for the 5+ years, when I moved to NC, I often wondered if I need to take protein supplement to replace the gnats I wasn't eating...

After growing up in Brunswick, going to Statesboro was an improvement in terms of gnats.

I grew up in Sylvester. The friends I made in Atlanta always wondered how we dealt with them in south GA. It really is quite something to watch Atlantans shoo gnats.

My mom grew up in Brunswick and between going down there and visiting my grandparents and then living in Beaufort, SC for three years, I've learned two indisputable facts:
1. Sandgnats are evil.
2. Avon Skin-so-soft is the only way to combat them.

naa-aah -
1) we Beaufortonians love our sandgnats - if it weren't for them we'd be up to our hinies in Northerners.
2)just light up a nasty cigar - Avon SSS is too slimy and makes you smell like a recruit...

Unless things have changed, we smelled like Aqua Velva. They sprayed it on our faces from a squirt bottle. We didn't have access to SSS, only the DI's did. I know the smell that you're talking about though. I can't help you on the WM thing. Maybe they sprayed their legs with it, or I guess they could have had some whiskers.
My Mom asked me on visiting day why we all smelled the same. :D
Sorry to get off topic, Gnats suck!

I am a little nervous about this game. Anyone got anything to make me feel better? Obviously, Im sure our advantage over teams like this will be speed as it ussually is, but I am a little nervous about our match ups across the boards.

Their 3-8 07 record is deceiving it is not a Big South 3-8. They played a FBS and bunch of ranked teams. They definitely will have an experience edge and they will be better than Austin Peay by far.

We're not much worse than we were this time last year?

Hatcher has repeatedly said that the D is much better this year than last, and I think I'll trust his judgement on that. After all, the coaches have game tapes that allow them to review every player on every play in every game. You can bet they are making adjustments to the scheme daily. Let's hope it's a work in progress that will get better each game.

I could see that. Remember being down to W. Georgia at half time last year and losing to UTC?

Northeastern gave us a run for our money in the 2005 opener, don't underestimate this team, they are better than their record. We need to shore up our tackling because our secondary will get tested. We can't afford another 1st half like we had against Austin Peay.

On the bright side, we have the same record after two games as last year and we have faced better competition. I'm thinking we're going to be fine as long as we can find a way to pull out the win, and learn a little from the ugly ones.

you could be an fu or an appy fan....., or a terrier supporter (do what you want with that one).....think about waking up every morning to that ......
c'mon guys - I've been on this board forever and it's the same ol stuff every season start - gloom and doom...gloom and doom - buck up.

not trying to be gloomy, I just want us to win and I get nervous when I am not sure what to expect. It has been a few years now since we all knew what we were getting so to speak and its quite stressfull.

Weren't we 2-0 last year?
CCU was better than AP. That's why they took us to the last minute.

Looks like they run a traditional O with a FB and RB. The RB is 5'7", 192 and the FB about 225 lbs. Their QB is 6'2", 240. We've seen him before as a freshman. He worked us over pretty good that day as I remember. WR are big, in the 6'2", 214-220 range.
Their TE is 6'7", 253 and the OL is in the 6'4" to 6'5", 290 range. Big and tall as expected.
Defensively it looks like they run a 3-4-4 with the DL running 261, 272, 265 and LB about the size of our guys. One big backer is 6'4", 245. DBs about our size.
They lost their only game at Ball State (48-14) and were off last week. Ball State also beat Navy on Friday night.
My guess is that they will be a disciplined team that will throw it more than run it, unless they see they can line up and run it right at us.

I could be wrong (going off memory), but I thought we started last year with West Ga. and Chatty. UGA and APSU are definitely a tougher start than those two.

They have the same QB as they had in 2005 when he was a freshman. He gave us fits. The only reason we beat them is their defense sucked.

I think this will be a great test for our team, this game will go along ways in regards to how we do in SOCON. We'll need to play a well disciplined game and play 2 halfs of football. Oh, by the way, we open our 2009 season by hosting the fighting scoobiedoos, yep, my old school UALBANY, the Great Danes come to Paulson!

After growing up in Charlton Co, you develop a tolerance for gnats. Our well had plenty of sulphur in it and the gnats no like sulphur water. Keeping in mind that the human body is mostly water. We had plenty of gnats, both sand gnats and the biting variety in Charlton Co, not to mention the dreaded yellow flies, another Satan spawn. But the gnats never really bothered me until moving to Statesboro and not having sulphur water.
