Georgia Southern University's Athletic Foundation has taken a bold step forward in beginning the process to determine the feasibility of constructing a new coliseum to replace the aging Hanner Field House.

Local governmental entities and GSU have been in discussions for the past three years regarding the need for a larger facility to accommodate the needs of the university and the community. Two popular locations they will explore to construct a proposed 6,500-seat coliseum is the corner of Fair Road and Tillman (which was the location of the original football practice fields) and across the bypass from Paulson Stadium in what is now called the South Campus expansion area.

The Athletic Foundation confirmed the study in a statement released this week.

Interested to see how this turns out- seems like progress is being made even though like the article states, it's been ongoing for 3 years now.

Is it me or does only 6500 seats seem like a waste?

Not for Graduations, major guest speakers, HS basketball/volleyball tourneys, possible concerts and other entertainment events. For GS basketball on any given night, hell yes.

The only thing we attract more than 5,000 people to are football games and your occasional concert. If a concert is anticipating drawing more than that they can just hold it in Paulson.

A waste in the sense that it's not needed.
People never grow up. They just learn how to act in public.

Hanner was brand new when I was a freshman in '69, I sure would like to be around to see its replacement.

it wouldn't make much sense to only build enough seats for the crowds we get now. As others mentioned, it could be used for other events, and should we really get good in bball for a few year span and make some tourny appearances, we could potentially see crowds that size. It makes sense.
