Thread: Second scrimmage and notes

  1. Default Second scrimmage and notes

GS athletics page has an article on today's scrimmage. Seems there were several big plays. Hope we can find them during game time this year.

Also saw where the NCAA did not approve Mike Summers request to have a sixth year of eligibility He has transitioned to becoming a graduate assistant while he finishes his masters degree.

Quick note on Monteo Garrett's big run:

The offense started on its own 5 yard-line on that series. After hitting a quick out route to the right side, the offense hurried up to the line, snapped the ball, and on what looked like a straight give, ran Garrett right up the middle through the defense for a TD.

so it sounds like we'll be putting on a lot more pressure this year than in previous years

CTS is maturing as a HC. Said some nice things after the scrimmage about the kids, the hard work and great energy they have put in. This year it seems more like a GS football team, top to bottom.

Offense looked much better. Handoffs were clean and pitches well timed and accurate. The O line was opening some lanes.
On the flip side the D had its moments, stopping some runs for short yards and caught the ball carrier in the backfield three or four times. There is definitely a renewed emphasis on short passing which was effective most of the time. We dropped three short easy catches.

Yes, we twice ran hurry up after a big gain and caught the defense napping.

Bass has a good leg, but he did miss a very makeable field goal.

I saw Werts take most of the snaps.

One Fortune made a leaping spinning circus catch on a 30 yard sideline pattern. Obe's got hands and concentration.

We have a while to iron out fundamental errors, and there are a few.

Wish we would run hurry up offense 80% of the time. We ran it a few times in 2016 with good results and failed to follow up. Quick hurry up offense for scores early on puts less pressure on defense and our momentum would be contagious.

the one and only time I saw it was against ULM and it worked, about the only series all season long that looked like we knew what we were doing, including blocking.
