Thread: Too Many Logos, Not Enough Brand?

  1. Default Too Many Logos, Not Enough Brand?

via our friend at Hail-Southern: https://hail-southern.com/blogs/news...of-distinction

Also a fantastic read about the history of our Medallion logo: http://news.georgiasouthern.edu/maga...f-destinction/

Point is, we have too many logos. No one know what logos to use or which one stands for which team/organization. We have the football team using a combo of the medallion logo, the baseball logo, and the eagle head. We have the basketball team still using the old "winged GS" logo for some things and the golf team using struttin Gus on everything. Recruits have to look at that ridiculous Freedom logo that was retired years ago on sites like 247 and USA sports. That does not bode well for our identity as an institution. Meanwhile the largest brands in our state, UGA and GT, have only three official logos: academic, primary athletic (initials), and secondary athletic (mascot). ALL of their teams use the SAME logo. It helps to increase brand awareness and loyalty. What can we do to solidify our image and make our brand more powerful?

We should never have went away from using the medallion logo in athletics. IMO we should use the medallion logo and the Cole Swindell/baseball "GS" logo. That's it. None of this silliness that we need separate logos for academics or baseball or whatever.
Hey, Tyson! Change the culture back!

If you think TK is the reason we don't have better non-conference football schedules, see this post.

A year ago, the athletic department said we were discontinuing the use of two logos. Yet, we still continue to sell products in our own bookstore, as well as other third-party vendors, with this branding on it. First step to retiring these should be to stop trying to promote these logos on merchandise.

Here is a quick reference guide:
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bw6k...ZvcGFNRWc/edit

We have ONE official athletics logo. The GS for baseball isn't even considered official, per the Identity Standards document. Neither is the winged GS. However, Strutting Gus is in the Identity Standards, although it is listed for use on novelty items.

The biggest problem, based on the recent revision of the Identity Standards, is that these standards aren't even enforced on campus. There's also no rules governing use of the Medallion on its own, only in conjunction with the University Word Mark.

For the record, UGA has 2 Athletics logos, the G and a Bulldog head (that they added only in the last few years....no idea why). GT has 3 Athletics logos, the GT and the Yellow Jacket as well as the Ramblin' Wreck.

See blog post from 2015. Couldn't agree more! Thought there were going to be steps in the right direction after notice of discontinuing two logos, but nothing! Disappointing. We need to get this right.

Except that pretty much everyone uses a different logo for the University and Athletics.

It seems most schools use 3 logos (University, Athletics, Secondary Athletics/other)

The Marketing departments for the Athletics and University need to poll the alumni, and use results to clean up the clutter of the brand.

why would we not capitalize on the brand awareness that cole swindell has created that didnt cost us a penny. Not to mention that is the cleanest and easiest to identify of all the logos.
