Thread: Group of Five National Championship

A G5 playoff/championship would just show that G5 is the equivelent of 1-AA of the old days, and that everyone has moved up a theoretical step to get back to where they originally were.
It sounds extreme, but it would make more sense for the P5s to form their own league outside of the NCAA, and leave the rest of us to play college football, while they play minor league to the pros.

Zero chance a G5 playoff will happen. The AAC sees themselves as peers with the Power 5 and will never agree to it, and if they don't do it no one else will.

The playoff will expand sooner rather than later, and it will be accelerated if two SEC teams get in (which will happen if Ohio State dominates Wisconsin).
Hey TK! Change the culture back!

If you think TK is the reason we don't have better non-conference football schedules, see this post.

They said for years there wouldn’t be a FBS playoff too.

    Boise?

Anything less than a 16 team playoff is bogus.
Too many Urkels on your team that's why your wins low

A 12 team playoff would work and the P5 might buy into it. The 10 FBS conference champions get bids along with the 2 highest ranked non-champions. The top 4 ranked teams get a first round bye. This adds two rounds to the current format and it would really just be 1 extra game (first round bye) for the top 4 who would get in with the current format. It would give complete legitimacy to the FBS NC game. You could use the current bowls as the playoff games helping make 10 of them relevant again. People would rather watch a game that has NC relevance than a match up of two 7-5 teams any day. It would make money and ESPN needs that now more than ever.

The P5 grudgingly tossed G5 a bone with the Access Bowl, no way in Haiti their expanding playoffs with G5's in mind. Expand to 6 so to get another 2 P5's in, yes, maybe.

The problem with 6 is two teams get a bye. Just go ahead and make it 8 and include the highest ranked G5. What we really have now is a P5 championship. That would make it an FBS championship.

They need to change the name of the "Access" bowl then.

As more cut the cord, ESPN needs more money. More playoff teams equals more money. P5 currently catch grief for scheduling us non relevant G5 for ooc games. They make a lot of money on those cheap to buy home games and gives their fans another home game. I think Bama had seven home games this year. When people see some of those teams in a playoff and see those conference names in, those regular season games gain some relevance.

Most G5 champions would eliminate each other in the first round anyway. Nothing really to lose here for the power five. And without one of us G5s pulling off a miracle of a run, non of us would survive to face the top four anyway. The power five teams in charge of "dispatching" the remaining g5s would be made up of the lowest ranked p5 champion and two at large. P5 teams that otherwise would have no shot at a title left, so I believe they'd be GLAD to put a lowly g5 out of its misery and play their way into a championship run.

If the SEC gets two in... An idea like this could pick up steam, support from a couple of P5 conferences who feel shafted.
And it would help if some taking heads would beat the drum for the only remaining undefeated FBS team in the country.

I wanted Auburn to beat uga. For more reasons than one, but two SEC teams in with one of those being a two loss team? THAT would have helped the cause.

Best plan:12 teams, top 4 get first round bye.
    If they go-to 6,: they'd give only top 2 a bye.
If they do this, they dang sure need to make that number six slot the "Access" team.

With the NfL in disarray right now - the ncaa would be wise to expand the playoff now - more $$ more opportunity for the big boys and the sunbelt’s of the world
