["By the Numbers" will spotlight a Georgia Southern Athletics team each week with statistics, rankings and other interesting items of note during our Eagles' seasons. The Swimming and Diving team is the featured squad this week.]


2. Georgia Southern Drops Finale, 2-0, at Davidson

[Georgia Southern finished the 2011 regular season on a down note with a 2-0 loss at Davidson on Wednesday night. The Eagles will open postseason play on Sunday afternoon with a trip to UNCG. The trip to the second season is Georgia Southern's first appearance in the conference tournament since the 2006 season.]


3. Powers Named Preseason All-SoCon, Eagles Host Voorhees on Thursday

[Georgia Southern's senior point guard Willie Powers III was hailed by the Southern Conference Coaches as the preseason all-conference team was announced on Wednesday, October 26th. The announcement came one day prior to the Eagles' first preseason game against Voorhees.]


4. Volleyball Honors Seniors, Hosts Final Home Games of the Season

[The Georgia Southern Volleyball team plans to honor their seniors with a pair of weekend games against The Citadel and the College of Charleston this weekend. The Eagles will host Halloween at Hanner on Friday night against Charleston and will hold Senior Day on Saturday at 4 p.m. against The Citadel.]


5. Eagles defeated by Bulldogs 3-1

[“We just need to execute better,” coach Chad Callihan said shortly after his team’s nail-biting loss to the Bulldogs 3-1.]


6. GSU discourages profanity at football games

[The crowd should not have used profanity when cheering at the game because of the family environment, said GSU parent Darron Miles. “I understand that it’s a college campus, but typically families come down for the football games and with all the little kids running around, it starts to become a problem,” said Miles. “You would think that at this level of football, there would be a higher level of maturity from the crowd.”]


7. Coach Young has high expectations for Eagles

[“We have some really good young talent,” said head coach Charlton Young. “I don’t think many people know that Jelani Hewitt, who was a freshman last year, led all freshmen in the country in steals, or that Eric Ferguson was the 19th rated freshman in the country and is a legitimate NBA prospect.”]

9. GSU's Russell ready to rock

[“It’s a great place to play,” Georgia Southern nose tackle Brent Russell said. “It’s a tough place to play because they have good teams, it’s loud, and their fans are on you, yelling stuff at you — just like ours do at Paulson. I have tremendous respect for their program and Coach (Jerry) Moore…he’s a legend,” Russell said. “But, we’re not going up there scared. (Roderick) Tinsley and I love to play in games like this. This is what college football is all about.”]


10. GSU player Heyden remains upbeat despite injury

[“You’re standing out there under the goalpost, and you have a kid in halo traction standing right next to you who just a few weeks before was dressed in a uniform and was one of your best players,” Monken said. “I don’t know if football is in his future, but he’s not willing to give in and give up. Just to be out there with him is a real privilege for me.”]


11. Mountaineers face ground-rule trouble

[Strong safety Troy Sanders said that Georgia Southern's triple option poses a bit of a different challenge from Wofford's. "In terms of speed and athleticism, this Georgia Southern team is pretty much at the top of the conference," Sanders. "It's not only on you to be sound with your assignment, but you've got to be fast getting there, or these guys will run past you."]

15. Lee Shaw and sons are enjoying triple option of success

[Jaybo played his first two years as a backup to Josh Nesbitt at Georgia Tech. After Jaybo broke his collarbone before his sophomore year, he played sparingly in 2009. When Tech assistant Jeff Monken took over at Georgia Southern after the 2009 season, Jaybo followed Monken to Statesboro. Jaybo helped lead the Eagles to the I-AA semifinals last season and this season, has run for seven touchdowns and passed for five.]

[After a de facto national championship semifinal against LSU on Nov. 5, the Tide visit Mississippi State the following week and then have a glorified scrimmage on the 19th against FCS power Georgia Southern.]


17. Blondell Slips to 77 in PGA Tour Q-School Event

[Logan Blondell of Lakeland shot 5-over-par 77 on Wednesday in the second round of the PGA Tour Q-School event in St. Augustine. The Lakeland High and Georgia Southern graduate, who opened with a 71 Tuesday at St. Johns Golf and Country Club, is tied for 58th with two rounds to play in the first-stage tournament.]



[Tibor Pleiss led Brose Baskets with 17 points on a 9 for 10 shooting from free throw line while Julius Jenkins had 15 points and three assists in the loss. PJ Tucker totalled 10 points and six rebounds for Brose, who dropped to 1-1 in the season.]
