Each day we strive to find article links involving Georgia Southern athletics and former Georgia Southern athletes. Should you find we missed an article link, please reply to help keep the Eagle Faithful informed:

1. Football Ready for 2009 Opener

[The wait is nearly over for the Georgia Southern Football team as the Eagles prepare for their 2009 season-opener on Saturday (Sept. 5) against Albany (N.Y.). Kickoff at Paulson Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.]

2. Georgia Southern Athletics Partners Again in Recycling Program

[For the fifth year, Georgia Southern University Athletics has partnered with Keep Bulloch Beautiful for the recycling program at Paulson Stadium. The 'Tailgating Recycling' program will be available starting with the season-opener on Saturday, September 5th.]

3. GSU transfer Scott knows how to win

[“He’s a great athlete,” said Hatcher of Scott. “The upside is that his talent has not been tapped into yet because he didn’t start playing football until so late. He’s played against some great talent the last two years, and he’s probably the most talented guy on our team from a standpoint of athleticism,” said Hatcher. “His potential is exciting. He’s been a great pickup for us. He’s had a great pre-season, and has developed high expectations for the future. It’s exciting to know he’s got three years to play for us.”]

4. Breaking down the Georgia Southern Eagles

[Hatcher has accumulated a 13-9 mark during his two years with the Eagles. He gained accolades in 2007 for scrapping his offense to re-install Jayson Foster at quarterback to win more games - something previous coach Brian VanGorder couldn't bring himself to do. But all hasn't been rosy. Last season, Hatcher's call for a two-point conversion in overtime against Wofford left some scratching their heads, particularly after the play failed. Hatcher has had the team playing with enthusiasm and has recruited well. He is 8-6 in games decided by seven points or less.]

5. Fountain eager to kick off senior season

[Georgia Southern offensive lineman Cole Fountain has a simple wish for this, his final season of college football. “My goal is to practice football on Thanksgiving Day one more time,” said Fountain, who starts for the Eagles at right tackle.]

6. Hatcher has brought stability to Eagles' program

[Chapple calls Hatcher's offense ‘a quarterback's dream.’ "It's a lot of fun to play in," he said. "Playing against Furman last year, we were just laughing half the time, it was just so fun to get out there and play in his offense."

7. Casale hopes to pick up where he left off

[Still, the Great Danes believe that they can compete with everyone on the schedule this season. “There’s not a team we feel we can’t beat,” said Casale, who added that he thought this was the fairest schedule the team has had since he’s been at UAlbany.]

8. Danes trying to reload on line

[That task begins Saturday, when the Great Danes travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern, a six-time Division I-AA national champion. "I'm in my fifth year," Richards said. "I've been around everyone, seen everyone come in as freshmen. You kind of grow a bond, just working all those years together, until someone gets a chance to get out there."]

9. Adrian Peterson needs solid game against Cleveland Browns

["There's a reason he has been around here," coach Lovie Smith said of Peterson. "He has been a great team player. He has been a good special-teams player. He has been a good running back when we have given him the opportunity. Every day I've been here, he has been here. So that tells you what we think about him. But this is a new year. You let everything play out and go from there."]

10. Last chance to shine for those on bubble

[It's been an uphill battle for Peterson, but he ran very well at Denver and has always been reliable on special teams. "I just show up on film," Peterson said when asked how he evaluated his chances. "If they stick me out on the field, I am going to show up. I'm going to let the chips fall where they do. I'm not losing sleep over anything."]

11. Projecting the 53-man roster for the Chicago Bears

[Adrian Peterson: A coach once called the veteran running back a security blanket for his ability to stick around. He doesn't do anything particularly well where he jumps out at you, but he does everything the right way and is about as reliable a player as you will find on the roster. In my estimation, a roster spot comes down to him and tight end Michael Gaines (more on that in a little bit). Peterson ran hard and ran well last Sunday in Denver, prompting one scout from another organization to inquire about what kind of guy he is. If the Bears let Peterson go, he's likely to find work elsewhere. The obvious plus to keeping a player like Peterson is his ability on special teams, but he wasn't quite as strong in that phase last season as he was in previous years.]

12. Building the Bears 53-man Roster – Bubble Guys

[Peterson, Adrian – I love his effort and consistency. Great on special teams. Think he sticks as the Bears keep 4 running backs.]

13. How I'd Trim The Chicago Bears Roster to 53

[Go with three: Matt Forte, Kevin Jones and Adrian Peterson. Cut Garrett Wolfe. Wolfe has shown he can fumble near the goal line this preseason. Peterson put on a display against the Broncos while being subjected to the humiliation of playing against fourth-string people who will be greeters at Target stores next week. He has been a quality backup who can take a hit and deliver them on special teams in addition to carrying the ball out of the backfield in all situations.]

14. Offense and Hester ready, Defense almost set, but who has to go?

[Adrian Peterson: He runs hard, he’s a steady special teams contributor, and his story as a division II running back who’s overcome a sever stutter is a great one. The problem is the serious number crunch on the offensive side and Garrett Wolfe’s surprising emersion on coverage units. He can still contribute in a number of ways but is so unlikely to see the field at this point. If the coaches decide against going with four tight ends or feel too strongly that they can’t lose his veteran presence maybe Peterson makes it back for another season. At this point it’s not that he can’t play but that he simply doesn’t have a role on the team.]

15. Big game on Thursday

[Adrian Peterson: The locker room feels like it needs Peterson on this team; does the coaching staff/front office feel the same way? Moving past Peterson's obvious special teams prowess, people tend to forget what a consistent runner he's been in Chicago. It's a tough call whether the Bears keep four running backs again this year. If they do, another position would have to be trimmed. I brought this up Tuesday; do the Bears need to retain four tight ends? Regardless of how Peterson performs against Cleveland, this may turn out to be one of the toughest calls as the final roster takes shape.]

16. For dozens of Ravens, a last chance to impress

[Do they go with Frank Walker or Derrick Martin as their fifth cornerback? Will Jalen Parmele, Matt Lawrence or Cedric Peerman be their fourth running back? Do they keep a seventh defensive lineman (Talavou) or a fifth wide receiver (Justin Harper, Yamon Figurs, Ernie Wheelwright and Jayson Foster)? How many linebackers will they end up carrying?]

17. Anxious times for Ravens as cutdown nears

[He ranks ahead of Yamon Figurs, Jayson Foster, Ernie Wheelwright and Eron Riley, who are facing tough odds to make the roster. Inconsistency in the form of dropped passes has plagued Harper.]

18. Padres Prospect Interview: Griffin Benedict

[Griffin Benedict: I was drafted by the Padres in the 16th-round of this year’s draft out of Georgia Southern. There was a local scout out of Tennessee who was with the Padres and I was lucky enough to talk a good enough game to get him interested in me. I was in Eugene for about a week and then [catcher] Adam [Zornes] got hurt so here I am.]

19. Fans’ farewell tour of Civic still needs one more happy ending

[“In that last inning I was on third and you could just feel the crowd,” (Ty) Wright said. “It was real loud.”]

20. Drive Head in Reverse Against Hot Rods, Lose 7-3

[With two outs and a man at first, Jeremy Beckham hit a routine grounder to shortstop that was misplayed by Kelly. Scelfo came up next and promptly jacked one over the Green Monster, giving the centerfielder four RBIs in the game.]

He did come from the highest division, just not the highest sub-division. We don’t get many alumni in the NFL and we follow them closely. Jason Foster is on the bubble with the Ravens and should see some playing time tonight. He was the Walter Payton Award winner in 2007. Rob Bironas of Tennessee kicked for us, and former CFL great Tracy Ham has his number retired.<o></o>

I guess it gets under our skin that the current Defensive Coordinator was brought in as our Head Coach in 2006 and recorded a school history worst 3-8 season as he tried to remove many long standing traditions. He couldn’t take the heat of the fans and media and left. Since, Chris Hatcher has worked to right the ship. We have high hopes for this year. We are working hard to win our 7th National Championship since 85, and it peaves us that since we have fallen from grace, App State has gotten all the glory. In 2007 when they beat Michigan and won the National Championship, they lost to one team, the Georgia Southern Eagles, who snapped their 35 game home winning streak.<o></o>

Sorry if I sounded rude. I’m a passionate fan, and I hope this small introduction to our program will cause you to take notice in the future. We are a blue collar program, from humble beginnings, that always try to, in the words of our legendary head coach Erk Russell, “Do Right”.<o></o>

GATA! Go Eagles! <o></o>

"Peterson played for Georgia Southern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Southern), one of the most successful NCAA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Collegiate_Athletic_Association) Division I-AA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_I-AA) football programs in the country. He finished his career not including the playoffs with 6,559 rushing yards, a Division I football record, and won the Walter Payton Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Payton_Award) in 1999. He was the first sophomore to win the award for most outstanding player in I-AA football."

You can nit-pick that Div I-AA is not technically Div-II but when Peterson finished school he did not come from the highest Division but also left as one of the all-time leading rushers.

Georgia Southern is a Division I school. Also, check the all-time rushing records and see where Adrian Peterson falls. ;-)
