  • Georgia Southern Finds Replacement for Football Home Opener

STATESBORO, Ga. – Due to a late cancellation by Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern has replaced the Chanticleers with Tusculum as the September 10, 2011, opponent at Paulson Stadium. The agreement between Georgia Southern and Tusculum is for a single game, with Tusculum receiving $75,000 for playing in the Eagles’ home opener.

“Maintaining the six-game home schedule for our fans was very important,” said Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Sam Baker. “The limited number of institutions that had an open date in 2011 were only willing to play us as a home game for themselves.”

The multi-game contract with Coastal Carolina was executed in 2007 with the Chanticleers’ previous athletics administration. Georgia Southern was notified of the unilateral cancellation by Coastal Carolina on Monday. The Eagles have won all three games in the series.

“It was extremely disappointing to receive word from Coastal of their intentions to cancel this season’s meeting – especially seven months before kickoff,” Baker said. “One year’s notice of the cancellation of a game contract is standard, but that courtesy was not extended to us by the current athletic administration at Coastal. They are well aware of our intent that they will fulfill their contractual obligation and play at Paulson at a later date.”

The first four home games of the 2011 season, Tusculum (Sept. 10), Western Carolina (Sept. 24), Chattanooga (Oct. 8) and Furman (Oct. 15) will kick off at 6 p.m. The last two home games of the regular season, Presbyterian (Oct. 22) and the Homecoming game against The Citadel (Nov. 5), are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

Renewal packets for Georgia Southern Football season ticket holders will be mailed at the beginning of March.
