Thread: Realistic Expectations for 2014 Season

Default Realistic Expectations for 2014 Season

This is an incredibly early question to ask, given we still have this upcoming season, plus we don't know what our recruiting class is going to look like yet. But I'm on a 9 hour drive to Virginia at the moment, and figured I'd try and get an interesting question out there. We know we have Georgia State, App State, Tech, NC State, Navy, and an FCS school (can't remember the name). Realistically I can see 3-4 wins out of those. Then we will play 6 other SB teams, who in all honestly I think we underestimate the level of, including myself. I just watched a replay of UL Monroe at Arkansas and they played extremely well against them, and their offense looked awesome. I don't see us finishing below .500 with this coaching staff, but for our first season, I can see 6-6 or 8-4. Again, this is incredibly early but I thought it'd be something fun to think about.

The following information is completely based on the opinion of gsu_paintballer and is not meant to be taken as a true representation of how our team will fare in 2014. If we pull off all the confident wins, and half of the potentials, there's a six-win season in our first season as an FBS team. That's nothing to be ashamed of.

(yes I know this is fourteen games, but it includes all Sun Belt teams)

    Confident wins:

    Idaho
    Georgia State
    Texas State
    New Mexico St.
    Duquesne (FCS)

    Potential wins:
    Navy
    Georgia Tech
    App. State
    South Alabama

    Likely losses:

    NCSU
    Troy
    Ark. St.
    UL-L
    UL-M

    EDIT: Added NMSU

I would move GT into likely losses, South Alabama into confident wins, and Troy, Ark St., ULL, and ULM into potential wins.

South Alabama really isn't that good. I'm more confident in beating them than Tech or even App. Troy has had a couple of down years recently. Hopefully they keep up the backslide, but I still wouldn't expect to beat them.

    Confident wins:
    Idaho
    Georgia State
    South Alabama
    Duquesne (FCS)

    Potential wins:
    Navy
    App. State

    Likely losses:
    NCSU
    Troy
    Ark. St.
    UL-L
    UL-M
    Tech

Assuming we have solid QB play from whoever wins the job.

    Confident wins:
    Idaho
    Georgia State
    Texas State
    Duquesne (FCS)
    South Alabama

    Potential wins:
    Navy
    App. State
    Troy
    Ark. St.
    UL-L
    UL-M

    Likely loss:

    Ga Tech
    NC St

    Don't forget NMSU!

    Confident wins:
    Idaho
    NMSU
    Georgia State
    Texas State
    Duquesne
    South Alabama

    Potential wins:
    App State
    Navy
    Troy

    Potential Losses:
    Arkansas State
    ULM
    ULL
    Tech
    NC St

So that has us at either that's 6 probable wins and 6 probable losses, with 4 toss up games. Now a lot of this will depend on our schedule of course, but like I said 6-6 or 7-5

It also depends on who we will play in conference. We won play two teams in our conference the first year and we might miss Arkansas State and UL-L or we might miss Idaho and S. Alabama. We don't know yet.

    Texas State
    New Mexico St.
    Duquesne (FCS)
    App. State
