Default NCAA announces change to redshirt rule

I like the changes for all of the reasons posted in the article.

So could you have a player whose career goes like this:
First Year: Plays in 4 games, red shirts
Second Year: Plays in 3 games, gets a medical hardship waiver.
Third Year: Plays in every game
Fourth Year: Plays in every game
Fifth Year: Plays in every game
Sixth Year: Plays in every game
Don't choose to be annoyed. Choose to be amused.

If you think TK is the reason we don't have better non-conference football schedules, see this post.

No. Only way to get a 6th year is to miss 2 years due to injury. In that scenario the player wouldn’t get a medical redshirt in the 2nd year. He would still be done after year 5.

Right, so they've basically gone to four and a third in five vs four in five.

Biggest thing IMO is letting the younger guys get some PT at the end of the year or the bowl game, without having to burn a shirt.

+1, Tomlin our freshman QB, comes in this fall, works hard, last 4 games of season we get him some game time experience. We then pull him and he goes into the following season as a red shirt freshman. Just giving this as example of how the new rule could help us become a better football team. Could be any kid who is playing great on our scout team, so we "call him up", let him see game action(no more than 4) and he should be more prepared for the following season.

Forget the end of the season. You play them at the beginning of the season. No point in finding out in game 10 that a true freshman is your best player at a certain position.

One would think by the first game, you know who your "guys" are. I'm talking more about the kid who early on isn't overly impressive but as the season/practices continues, he "steps up" and REALLY starts to look like a player: you call him up and see how he does "under the lights".

I like the idea for the simple fact that there have been kids before that came in due to a late season injury to the #1 guy and had to burn a full year of eligibility because of it. It also gives the kid getting redshirted a chance to actually see some PT instead of just practicing for a entire year This is one of the few times the NCAA has made a rule that is positive for the student athletes.
