Thread: Most Impressive Turnaround: 1997, 2010, or 2018?

Default Most Impressive Turnaround: 1997, 2010, or 2018?

Discussion topic for the last week of the off-season. Which of the 3 big turnarounds was the most impressive?

1997 (4-7 to 10-3) - Paul Johnson had the best roster situation without a doubt between the talent and schematic continuity.

2010 (5-6 to 10-5) - May have had the most difficult roster situation of the 3, though the W/L record looks better after sneaking into the playoffs.

2018 (2-10 to 10-3) - Didn't have an overly big roster problem in terms of talent, but some really bad development that would be a problem with any offensive or defensive scheme.

2018 - the team had long quit on TS in 2017. Our team was like an abused dog, that lost weight and was scared, to 2018 the team that won best in show.

2018 tied a few others for the biggest turn around in the history of NCAA football so.....

2010 gets my vote. A mediocre team from 2009 installs a completely new offensive scheme using a lot of the offensive talent from the previous year, although Jaybo was obviously a huge help in that transition. Signature win over the #1 team in FCS and wins over the MEAC champion as well as two road playoff wins over top 25 teams. Provided the needed spark for FBS discussion (again).

I'll reserve my answer until after this season.

Too early to tell right now.

Both 97 and 2010 led to high level performance for each respective staff for multiple years. It's looking good right now but we just don't have the results back from this staff yet.

Initial look is really good though. I do think in both 97 and 10, the teams were more functionally broken than the team was in 2018. A lot of what had to be fixed last year was consistency and confidence, but things hadn't really been derailed long enough for a lot to have to be reworked.

2010 gets my vote due to the drastic schematic changes on both sides of the ball and the 4 years of terrible football that was unprecedented for us at the time. 97 and 18 just needed competent coaching.
